The Sedates

The Sedates – PUNK IN 2019

There’s an old adage that says, if the music is older than you, you are not obliged to like it. Not these guys from Cavite.

Growing up in Cavite is something when it comes to forming a band. “Me and Jell Nathan (bassist) met in Junior High in Cavite. We hang out and jam some punk tunes like Green Day. Jonard Lua (drummer) is from La Union then he decided to work here in Cavite”, says Nyl Semper (guitarist/vocalist).

Nyl started learning the guitar at the age of 9, he's 19 now. Jell learned to play the guitar at the age of 13. When the band was formed, he switched to bass guitar because it doesn’t much differ from the guitar, he's 17 now. Jonard learned to play drums when he was 13, now he's 21.

The Sedates’ pre-show performance last May 9 in Cavite City, more than raised eyebrows; donning leather jackets, studded pants and combat boots to complete the set. “I thought they are very good and with enough exposure they are well their way to the music scene”, said Road Abutin of Rock Track Entertainment. “With Sir Road on our side on our musical journey, we could not go wrong. Plus he really appreciates us and our love for music”, says Nyl.

Nyl came from a music family. His great grandmother was a piano teacher. His grandfather and father listen heavily on classic hard rock like Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Guns N' Roses, and the likes. His mother listens to Nirvana, Guns n Roses, and Linkin Park.

Nyl came up with the band name "Sedates", easily from The Ramones’ classic punk tune ‘I Wanna Be Sedated.’ Nyl is basically a rock dude from the start. As for Jell, his father is his influence. Both a soldier and musician, his father used to play guitar and bass in church. That's where Jell got his influence, skills, and passion from. As for Jonard, it all started when he was just a kid back then, every time he hears his uncle "Papz" listening to rock music and see him dress like a metal god, Jonard imitates him and his style because it really caught his attention and heart.

They cover a lot  of Clash's songs which makes them unmistakably punk in genre, but they also like to experiment. They used varieties of music, not just straight punk but also rock n roll, reggae, ska, and more. “That's what we're gonna do in our music. We liked to be considered as this some sort of evolving, experimental punk rock. Also it's 2019, we will somehow make our music enjoyable on these days”, explains Jonard.
We already got two compositions called "Lock and Load" and "Jimmy in the Bottle". Nyl and Jell wrote a lot of lyrics and there's more on the way!
"As for our music originals, well we just basically think of a topic, usually social issues, write lyrics and when its done, we just put some instrumentals, beat, and tune then BAM, we'll rock it out. For lyrics writing, well Nyl always liked doing it the Tom Waits' way. After thinking of an idea, he just turns on his laptop and his phone and both of these gadgets will play different songs at the same time. This boosts his creativity not just on lyrics but also on instrumental as well.”, Jonard exhorts.

We just like to keep going on what we have started. Make some records and play on shows. We like to go far and high with our music so we will just rock it out with such passion.
