Jhay Judan Angas Ng Mandaluyong

Socio-Political and Socio-Cultural songs are one of the most difficult songs to compose. Not only for its sensitivity, but the effectivity of the song to be conveyed to the listeners is also a concern. But not these guys from Mandaluyong. They are Brash, Brute and Brawny; but only in looks.
Meet Jhay Judan, frontman of the band ANGAS NG MANDALUYONG. “Since birth, dito na ako lumaki sa P.Victorino Barangka Itaas Mandaluyong City. Since high school kase yan na ang bansag sa akin, maangas/mayabang - but only in looks not in words. So sabi ko, pag nagka band ako eto na gamitin ko name”, exudes Jhay.

His college days in AMA Makati produced his 1st band ‘Syntax  Error’. Only active from 1992 to 1995, he settled down with his wife and kids. He then work for TV5  - 12 years running - as a Field Cameraman in the News Department. And came back to forming this band in 2016.

Their looks is as intimidating as their sound, but the message of their songs are not that sublime. “Sherman de Jesus, our guitarist/writer grew up in a community that experiences lots of problem, cultural-wise and political in nature, kapit-bahay ko sya. ”, explains Jhay.

'Angas Ng Mandaluyong' is a class act on its own. Jhay resorts to all kinds of gimmickry there is in the book to attract listeners. In their post-show performance last May 09, in Cavite City, Jhay upon entering the stage gulped a considerable amount of water and spit-spray it upward, sending a drizzle of rain to the audience.

“Unpredictable kasi ako sa stage kung ano maiisip ko na gimmick para matandaan kami, there was this Fiesta that we were invited, while performing namigay ako ng tig P20.00 sa audience, ayun parati na kami iniimbita sa Mandaluyong. At least killala na kami. Minsan alak at bucket ng beer with pulutan sa bar ang pinamimigay namin para matandaan kami ng crowd, yun lang magastos pero masaya”, chuckles Jhay.

Jhay involves his family in his passion.  Tyron Judan, his third son plays rhythm guitar. Alex Bernardo his cousin plays drums. Darwin Garcia on bass is a family friend. Renato Galang and Yowda Rivera completes the band. “My eldest Gokou is our driver/bouncer, Gohan my other kid takes care if the technical side of band and uploader sa FB at Youtube, my youngest Nikol and my wife taga palakpak sila”, shares Jhay.

Their musical style in performing on stage is not that different from others claims Jhay, musically Rock is their genre. Currently, they have 10 original compositions, “Pero isa pa lang nai record namin  (hindi pa ata na master copy)”, admits Jhay. Their song "Pwesto” talks about a moneyed politician who protects and  sells drugs because ‘nasa pwesto na siya’.
"KUNG SINO PA KASI ANG NASA PWESTO SILA PA ANG NAGPAPATAKBO, NG MASAMANG GAWAIN SA IBABAW NG MUNDO" -PWESTO, 1993

One memorable gig they partook was opening for Parokya Ni Edgar and December Avenue last Nov.2018. “Nagpaagaw ako ng ANGAS MUG, ayun bumagsak sa noo ng estudyante, duguan, MEMORABLE na ouch yun. Basta lahat memorable at importante  sa amin”, says Jhay.

So guys, watch out for their next gig and like their FB page ANGAS NG MANDALUYONG, and who knows what will they be giving away next time.
