His imposing figure is omnipresent in every Rock gig in Manila. His stature is something to reckon with; a cut-off sleeve denim jacket with patches of local and international bands, black cap, black pants, skull ring a vape and a sneer. Meet Paulo Tamayo Legaspi.
“I grew up in Pasay, studied in Letran, si Papa ko talaga ang isa sa dahilan kung bakit ako na hook sa music. From Saudi, madami syang dalang tapes, may foreign at local bands, ang isa sa una kong napakinggan at nagustuhan yung ASIN. Dun na nag umpisa ang lahat dahil pati ako nag umpisa na rin mag collect ng iba’t ibang Tapes, gumawa ng mga Bootleg, at nagrerecord ng kanta from the Radio. Galit nga ako sa mga DJ na nagsasalita pa rin habang nagsisimula na tumugtog yung kanta. Kaya sabi ko kapag magkaroon ako ng Radio Station wala akong gagawing DJ hehehe”, confesses Paulo.
His radio program "pinoyrockradio", an on line internet show, streams for 24 hours and has helped countless bands to be exposed. With a daily dose of all genre Pinoy programs like;
MOANDAY SCREAM, INDIE TUESDAY, IRIE WEEDNESDAY, THIRSTDAY THROWBACK, BEERNES, SHOTURDAY:BASAGAN NG BUNGO & SOUNDAY: SUNDAY'S BEST.
He says, it is not that costly to maintain an on line radio show, compared to mainstream radio. “My monthly operating cost is almost PhP15,000, and this includes the monthly package for the Cloud Server Storage / Web Player, they are the bridge for my daily operations thru my Server PC at Home. Hopefully in the near future I can build my own studio with complete Music Instruments / Amps outside my home so that I can invite bands to play live and stream this online via Facebook and/or Youtube”, dreams Paulo.
His music collection, now numbers in thousands, and he have lost count of it. “Some of my Tapes / CDs and some Vinyl Records of my friends nai-convert ko na sa MP3 format and uploaded to my Cloud Storage. Just imagine na I have all those records from the 1960s to present from Various Bands with different Genres of Music, and up to now I always keep on updating my Cloud Server for the new songs/albums/EP”, musters Paulo. Pinoyrockradio was first conceptualized in 2013, and after so many attempts to get it going, this is mainly due to the unstable network here in the Philippines, he then started to test broadcast on April of 2015. He also decided to stream only at 128kbps of MP3 Format.
Paulo also listens also to foreign acts. “Mostly talaga nasa metal ang genre ko. Kami lang ng bunso kong kapatid ang mahilig sa Rock. Pareho din kaming nakanta at nagigitara. Sandali lang din stint ko sa pagbabanda dahil sa hectic ng schedule ng trabaho hindi pwedeng pagsabayin at nag abroad na rin halos naging Ka-Banda ko from ZARTRAZ (Pinoy Thrash Metal)”explains Paulo. “Pero nakikinig din ako ng LOVE SONGS sa gabi hehehe..pang balance siguro sa ingay at pampa-relax din paminsan-minsan hehe… JOKER ako talaga na seryoso sa buhay”, muses Paulo.
His only mind set in forming this online radio is to give all Pinoy bands a chance to be heard even via internet. “There are several artists from the Underground scene that don't have a chance to be aired, so I am doing this for them. My ultimate goal in forming this Online Streaming Radio is to let everybody knows that Pinoy Rock Music Scene is still alive mula sa Live Music Shows hanggang sa Radio. At ang adhikain ko lang ay maipagpatuloy ang mga nasimulan ng "DZRJ: Boss Radio" na naging "DZRJ: THE ROCK OF MANILA" - PINOY ROCK & RHYTHM... to WXB 102.7 to LA 105.9 ROCK OF THE WORLD TO NU 107.5 HOME OF NEW ROCK, 88.3 Jam Radio and RAKISTA RADIO.”, says Paulo.
“Yung Pinoy Rock Radio Online lang siguro ang isa sa D.I.Y Music Station na nagpapatugtog ng iba't-ibang Music Genre araw-araw from Mainstream Bands, to Underground Music at hanggang Extreme Metal Music na hindi ginagawa sa ibang Mainstream Radio or Internet Radio. Imagine I have all those music from Various Bands from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanano, and mga bands na nasa ibang Bansa na may Lahing Pinoy din”, says Paulo.
His legacy when his time comes? “Yun maisip na lang siguro ng mga tao na may isang Paulo Tamayo Legaspi na ginawa kong ma-archive halos lahat ng albums ng mga Pinoy Musikero. Sabi ko kasi sarili ko na gagawa ako ng isang Maliit na Project na makatulong sa mga nagbabanda at meron din akong maiambag kahit na maliit sa eksena ng Pinoy Rock Music. I love our Music kasi kahit halos lahat ay kinopya natin sa ibang lahi ang Music na meron tayo ngayon, I believe na magaling ang ating mga Pinoy Musikero and we have our own style na maging iba din ang ating Tunog kumpara sa mga Foreign Bands”says Paulo.
